List your space movies

Post by Kemara »

This is the same as for the books. List your favorite space-related movies, fictional or not, and tell why you give them 4 stars.
Apollo 13- Self-explanatory. I have this on DVD and Jim and Marilyn Lovell's commentary is worth the price.

Space Station- No, not the new IMAX film. This is put out by the Discovery Channel. It gives you an up-close look at the planning and building of ISS. Not quite up-to-date any more, but the DVD has some nice extras.
The Right Stuff- Classic story of how it all began. It's available on DVD at Wal-Mart these days for $15 with a few extras.

Apollo 13- Just an excellant movie. Extremely well done and researched. Infact the actors trained at space camp prior to filming.

From the Earth to the Moon- Its an excellant series available on VHS and DVD its expensive but its worth the money. Tom Hanks knows his space history.

Conquest- Its an older documentary but with footage even i've never seen before and that says alot. If you can find it you can probably get it cheap. Its outdated in some of the shuttle info now but its still great fr historical stuff and to see what NASA had in mind for the shuttle.

Moon Shot- This came out about 10 years ago based on a book by Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton. The two authors were part of the space program from the beginning through apollo and the video has some great information. As well as interviews with many of the Key players in the early space program.

Apollo 13 has to be my favorite movie of all time. My favorite scene is the launch sequence and liftoff. James Horner's "The Launch" is an awesome musical score and I play it whilst imagining myself taking my place for liftoff. Call me crazy if you like...

I like Armageddon. It's about these miners who go dig a hole in an asteroid that's about to hit earth. They will planet a bomb in the hole and escape. I rate it 4 stars. It's really good. 8)

Well as much as i enjoyed the story in Armagedon and as much as i enjoyed Liv Tyler that movie is so unrealistic and has so many errors in it it makes it hard for someone like me who is a technical person to enjoy the film completelly.

I don't like Armageddon. You have the saving-the-word story which is horrible with all of the errors and then there is a parrallel story which is all of the conflict/love/interest between Bruce Willis, his daughter, and Ben Afflec and is really sappy. I don't think the direction was great, either.

I tend to be really picky on technicalities like Jason. Therefore, Armageddon is not one of my favorites. The only exception to my technicality rule is Space Camp.

Pre WWII

Post by ApolloXI »

There was a moive from 1991 called The Rocketeer. I loved it when I was little and after viewing just yesterday I still like it. It is all Pre WWII with the idea of strappig a rocket to someones back and letting them fly. If you are fans of Jennifer Connelly from "A Beautiful Mind" this is one of her first flims. Here is the amazon.com review
Based on a retro-styled comic book hit of the '80s, this Disney film was meant to launch a whole line of Rocketeer films--but the series began and ended with this one. That's too bad, because this underrated Joe Johnston film has a certain loopy charm. The story centers on a pre-World War II stunt pilot (Bill Campbell) who accidentally comes into possession of a rocket-propelled backpack much coveted by the Nazis. With the aid of his mechanic pal (Alan Arkin), he gets it up and running, then uses it to foil a plot by a gang of vicious Nazi spies (is there any other kind?) led by Timothy Dalton. Jennifer Connelly is on hand as the love interest, but the real fun here is when the Rocketeer takes off. There's also a nifty battle atop an airborne blimp. --Marshall Fine

I saw the Rocketeer....it is incredibly unrealistic, but still very cool. I always wondered how when they lit the rocket they didn't burn themselves.... :?
