Not very far at all. People going to work at KSC have to pass right by it, as to people with launch tickets.

When you went to Space Camp Florida was there a launch?

That would have been fun. The last 3 times I've been in FL there was supposed to be a launch, but they all got delayed.

That has kind of been on my to do list in life since I was very very little. Every since I saw Apollo 13 when I was 8, I wanted to go to a shuttle launch.

LOL here you go making me feel old again i was a teenager when Apollo 13 came out. But anyway ive seen two unmanned launches from Wallops Island one was a sounding rocket the other was a sattelite but the booster exploded needless to say it was rather spectacular to see it was also the last major launch done from wallops island everything since has been sounding rockets. I did get to see the shuttle flyover a couple of times once while it was in orbit and once as it was launching when its trajectory took it up the east coast i couls see the engine light.

Well it is your fault for being old! I think you will survive. At least, I think I was 8 when that came out...I may have been 9. Oh well. I still haven't seen any launches, much less where a booster explodes. I have witnessed the launches of my own sacrificial lawn dart rockets though!

there wasn't when i was there but then again the tour was great too and they didn't offer both...

Well the one i saw explode was from a distance you could see the exhaust rail going up and up and up then several new ones coming down. Went inside to check the news because it was being carried localy since its not far away and the pao guy was still saying its going up wjhem infact it had exploded and was falling back to earth.

Well they did that with Challenger too if I am not mistaken. The PAO guy was reading off some figures and not looking at the screen when the thing had exploded all over the place.

Oops if i said pao guy i was mistaken it was actually the news reporter who was watching it and he was commenting on how it was so beautiful as it was going up and up but at the time it was actually coming down.

Yeah tghe media dont know what they are talking about half the time i mean the day of the columbia accident they kept saying on the botom of the screen that columbia had made its first flight in 1988 and it stayed that way most of the day.

Right, 1988. I agree with Benji, stupid media. But I did see the Challenger tape once and the PAO was talking about some stats and it had exploded.

Well the pao was looking at his computer console and the data he was saying was what he saw. Unfortunately it wasnt in real time so he wasnt aware of what had happened till a few seconds later when the data was lost and he saw what had happened on the monitors.

My favorite thing they did that was incredibly stupid was say that all of the parts on Columbia were 20 years old. In the middle of my incredibly bad mood I was already in, they said that and I jumped up off the couch. They should know that of course the tiles weren't 20 years old. Neither were most all of the parts on that orbiter at the time. They later corrected themselves saying that Columbia was almost new with all the new parts and repairs.

Well i remember them saying Columbia was more than 20 years old but i dont remember them not saying about the refit it just had but then i wasnt on watching the tv all day wither. The smartest thing the media does when there is a launch or something like this happens is bring in astronauts to talk on camera or even just on the phone which CNN did throughout the day.
