STS-123

Post by SpaceCanada »

I didn't get to see the launch but I saw photos on the web and heard about it on the radio this morning. Night launches are so beautiful. Oh, wait, they are all beautiful.

On board Endeavour has 7 astronauts, the first part of Japan's Kibo module, and Dextre, Canada's latest robot contribution to the ISS.

It will be the longest planned shuttle mission in history.

I'm excited for this mission. Yay!

PS - They recently announcend Canada's first ISS residency too!

I haven't had a chance to see it yet. I was dead to the world last night. If I had been on the east coast of Florida instead of west coast, I probably would have set the alarm and went outside to see it. I agree, night launches are gorgeous!

I didn't take as many this time because of the low ceiling and just wanting to sit back and enjoy one with the naked eye more :) Boy I'm tired though....

Got to sleep at 4:30, and had to be in at work this morning...

Thanks for posting that, Sarah! I love the way it's reflecting off the water.

Anytime! My pleasure.

That was my favorite shot. After I took that one, I put the camera down and enjoyed it for the remaining 5 seconds that we could see it. Absolutely one of the most beautiful I've seen.

Aw Man! Because of the early morning start all of the EVAs and activities are also going to be at 3 and 4 AM.

A 16 day mission with 5 space walks and I have to watch it all as replays.

Dang! :?

And, apparently, one of the astronauts brought along an iPod.

Remember those medieval days when you could only bring one or two audio cassettes along?

Thought this was interesting:
The [iPod's] lithium batteries have to be replaced with specially certified alkaline batteries. Once docked, crew members can't bring them on board the Space Station, however, since they haven't been certified as safe in that environment.
Anyone know why this is? I would have thought that anything that was okayed for one was fine for both.

I don't know for certain, but perhaps it is because iPods haven't been cleared to be in space for longer than a certain amount of time. If, say, that amount of time is three weeks, they're fine for the shuttle. But, if it gets onto the station and accidentally gets left there, it might cause unforseen problems.

It may be because the ISS is made up of modules from different countries. What might be fine in the Destiny lab might be dangerous in Zvesda (?)
