Bush Cancels Space Shuttle Program

Washington DC (SPX) Mar 31, 2005

US President George W Bush declared today that he had signed a rare presidential decree canceling any further expenditure of Federal funds on the US Space Shuttle program. "We cannot find any justification to continue deficit funding of a program that has no application other that proving that with enough money America can do anything," said Bush.

"The whole world knows that already, so why keep spending money on it," he added. The announcement was made during an even rarer press conference with Whitehouse press corps, at which the President started proceedings by handing out Easter Eggs, quipping, "it might be politically incorrect to hand these out, but don't worry we got them at a discount at a Walmart sale yesterday so they aren't really a religious item anymore."

With the press left looking like stunned bunnies, the President took to the podium before dropping today's bombshell canceling the space shuttle program, which Congressional supporter's of the Space Shuttle have told SpaceDaily, "will cost thousands of jobs, and leave school children confused as to what America can actually do in space anymore."

During the press conference Bush told reporters, "I don't want to see another NASA administrator - appointed on my watch - left to justify a program to Congress based on lies, dis-information, half-truths and sexed up reports."

During a brief two-minute period provided for questions from the press, the first reporter asked if this meant the Space Station was also being shut down. To which the President answered, "we plan to either hold an auction on Ebay or give it away to "our international partners."

Oh, the joy of April Fool's Day! ;-)

The only reason I didn't believe this is because I was totally taken in for a few moments by Vincent's announcement on the front page before realizing it was an April Fool's joke!!! I guess I got complacent after no one played any jokes on me today...

So many sites do the shutting down joke. I think on mine I should just put a 404 error on every page.

Hmm... haha, I totally knew this one after like a paragraph... and not because of the other joke... just cuz I'm prepared.

But wow, this would have been quite the prank had I taken it seriously!

[darn], I was thinking "about time." As much as I love the shuttles, they're out of date. The program was overpromised and underdelivered and it's time space exploration moved into the new millenium. Perhaps commercial space programs will succeed shortly. This is what I am hoping for; private endevours will not have the buerocracy that holds NASA back and will probably be much more efficient.

We collectivly decided it would be more fun to stop the flames before they happened rather than have to hear the same ones all over again.

I could change my position, but if we're all in agreement, it just wouldn't be as fun. :D Anyway, I wish they'd at least go save Hubble.
