John Young

Post by Boomerang »

Well it's finnaly happening after 42 years as an astronaut John young the last of the active moon walkers is retiring from NASA this month. For those of you who are not familiar with Young he was selected in the second group of astronauts "The New Nine" for project Gemini in 1962. He made the first Gemini flight with Gus Grissom on Gemini 3 later he also flew Gemini 10, Apollo 10, Walked on the moon as Apollo 16, Commanded STS-2, and STS-9 and was assigned as commander of STS-61J prior to the Challenger accident. This mission was originally supose to deploy Hubble. After Challenger he became the head of a new NASA safety office. And though working in management he remained on the active Astronhaut roster throughout his career and remained eligible for command of Space Flights. He is the last of the moon walkers to retire and he will be sorely missed i'm sure. Below you will find the link to the Space.com article. http://www.space.com/news/john_young_041204.html
