What about a Hab1 chat room?

Post by Boomerang »

Vincent is their anyway you could put a chatroom on the website? The forum is great but it would be even better tyo beable to talk in real time. Just a suggestion.

Note from Moderator: Topic split from "Have a good idea for a HabPoll? Post it here!" thread into its own seperate thread

I could do it...the problem is, I don't really like them...here's why...

For one, we are communicating in almost real time!

Secondly, with a forum, there is a record of what's been said. It's good to keep a record of what's been said...for history's sake! :!: :?:

Thirdly, with the forum, no one really has to be here for you to post. Others can later come and read what you posted and then reply. With a chat room, if there's no one in it, no one stays in it. It'd be quite difficult to keep people in chat rooms until someone comes in! In my experience, they just don't work. They sound good, but they don't work!

Finally, that's really what AIM is for, isn't it?! :D
AIM, YIM, ICQ, etc. are all really better suited for such functions, aren't they?

So while I do appreciate the suggestion, I just don't really think it'd be good...at least not hear. I like forums much, much better!

Thanks for the suggestion though. Don't hesitate to make more in the future!

I'll look into it on this side. But just a few things to consider...

are you using AOL's software? I think it won't work quite right if you're not (i.e. If you're a Trillian user, this could be the problem. I use Gaim and it doesn't work, either)

For a short term fix, you can see the screen name of the user in the AIM link. So, even if it doesn't work, you can take a look at the link and it'll tell you what the person's screen name is.

I'm using AOL itself. And the problem is the link never comes up otherwise i would just send an im to the screen name i saw.

After doing some testing, I see now that you're right...the AIM icon seems not to work right with AOL, but only AIM!

...but you can still see the screen name in AOL. Just look at the status bar of your browser when in AOL on the HabForum.

When you move your mouse over someone's AIM icon, you'll see some stuff, including "screenname="

whatever's after that is the screen name...

This obviously is not fun to have to do all of the time. I'll fix it if I can...

You are right, vincent, about the chat room, but if this sunday is any indicator, a chat room might be pretty cool!

Yeah...I did actually have the though, "well, maybe a chat room would work."

...Only today's mayhem could have produced such a thought in my head!

But, with regard to what today was like, I offer the following:

1) This is fantastic!
2) You don't have to read and reply to every single post (though I completely understand why you want to...it's the same reason I want to!)
3) It's not a contest. There's no prize to whomever has the most posts. I won't be showing up at that person's house to present to them a cookie! :D

With this in mind, everyone here is awesome! keep reading the posts, keep replying to the posts...give yourself a headache from staring at your computer monitor for so long (just like the one I have now!)...even with that, this is a wonderful place, because of the enthusiasm of all of you!

Hey all of us who have AIM or AOL could start a chatroom sometime! We just have to be online at the same time and have atleast one person know all of the addresses. My screen name is outerspace12
appropriate huh? Well if you try to talk to me all i ask is that you tell me who you are first think or else i am likely to block you. lol
