Requirements to be a councelor

Post by ethlar04 »

I was looking this stuff up a while ago and at one point found the answer but i dont remember it. There was something about a required number of college credits and previous experience with children. Does anyone know the real requirements are, aside from passing the tests for training. Id like to try to be a spacecamp councelor for at least one summer in college.

You can find answers to this, and many other questions about becoming a counsellor at Space Camp's employment website for counsellors:

In the Counsellor Information Booklet 2004 (PDF) it says, in big, bold, and underlined letters: "No physical contact with trainees allowed unless it is a life-threatening situation."

What's with that? I mean, realistically... I could see "no inappropriate contact" but no contact what-so-ever? I think every one of my counsellors has broken that rule at least a dozen times a day! (helping hands, simulators, group photos, etc.)

Just one of those oddities I thought I would point out.

Maybe it's the whole PDA thing?

Confusing to me too. I was flipping through the document and found in the aviation challenge counselor section that they should "assist trainees into and out of simulators" as necessary i assume...

How can you do that without physical contact as well?

I'm sure they're just covering their tails for any lawyers who may see the need to sue for a counsellor having physical contact with a trainee. Kids say the darndest things, and parents have a tendency to over-react, you can fill in the rest. It's probably also there so that if anything does happen, the blame can be put on the counsellor as an individual without involving the Space Camp foundation.

Oh the legal system is much like the spider-web obstacle for the indoor Area 51: many strings to get tangled in with a lot of holes in between.
