Everyone's Favorite...Ice Breakers!

Post by Vincent »

So I was thinking back over my time at camp, and I remembered the ice breakers my counselors would make us do...I tried to forget them, but I just couldn't, so I thought I'd bring the pain to the front of everyone's mind!

What ice breakers did you counselors do with you to "help" everyone get to know each other?

For any counselors that might be lurking these forums (it happens every now and then), what ice breakers have "ya'll" done at other places that might work well for a counselor to try at Space Camp?

...the two that stick out in my mind that counselors did at camp was the "Traveling Alliteration" game (my name is Vincent and I'm going on a trip and I'm taking V-something, and this is John and he's taking a J-Something...) and the "Adjective Alliteration" game (My name is Vincent and I am V-something, and this is Amy and she is A-something)...

Feel free to comment! :)

The only year we ever really did an ice breaker is when i went to AC and then we just got up in front of the team told about ourselves and then told an embarrassing story to get our callsigns.

when i went, we really didn't do anything like that. all we did was introduce ourselves, giving our age and where we were from. I kinda wish they had played an icebreaker, because honestly, there was one girl who i didn't even really meet till the 3rd day or so, and found out we really had alot in common. oh well. we did play one game on the 2nd day, though, where we stood in a line, all touching the person in front of us 8) and we were all standing on these pieces of wood. then the person at back had to move to the front, all the while touching someone, and the team had to pass her piece of wood to the front for her to stand on. in this way, the line advances forward. then we repeated until the team crossed a finish line. no one could come off their log and if anyone touched the floor, or anyone was caught not touching someone else, then the team lost. i know its hard to explain! it was fun though

That's a pretty good point, actually...yet I don't think anyone gets to do Area 51 the first day at ASA, do they?

IceBreaker

Post by shenandoah04 »

The ice breakers.... ah, what memories!
Let's see, I've done lots...
Once, we did one where one person had to look at different people, and if they did, you were "out" Everyone still in the game had to guess who was ousting everybody...
Then of course, as you said, there was the one where I am "Lisa and I am a...." but I didn't have to come up with a "L" word, just a word, and mine was nebula :D
We also have done the knots thing, which is interesting...
And then, this past year, I think we all just started talking. I don't know, we had a few people with the same name (and the same last initial, which was unique) but mostly, for that group, we just started talking. :D

I really dont remember any real ice breakers my team did except at AC and at Ac the main reason for it was to pick callsigns for the team. But then in 93 and 98 i got there later in the day than most of the team because of flight schedules and so i might have missed them.

IceBreakers are fun! Actually not really, but sometimes it is fun to play some of those games. The only real one I can remember is when I was doing the EALD thing and we played the "so if you were stranded on a desert island and you could only take one _____ what would it be?" game. That was interesting mainly becuase one kid said he would take a Rolling Stones CD and the latest Eminem CD. Talk about variation. He was only 9, too.

We played I've never. Basically, we just got in a big circle with one less chair than there were people. One person stood in the middle and said something they'd never done everyone who had done that, had to switch seats with someone. If you were the one left with out a seat, you were in the middle. You couldn't take your own seat though. I had a big advantage when I said I've never been in a public school. Everyone except our counselor had to move.

That sounds like an intresting one. I don't know they might have done an ice breaker at ASA but i got there late in the day and so i might have missed it. But it didnt seem to be a problem we all became friends verry quickly.

We played "Two Truths and a Lie," where you tell two truths and a lie about yourself and your teammates have to guess which is the lie. I told them that I was the fastest runner on my track team as my lie. I'm actually very slow and not on a track team.

I played that the first day of sixth grade, but never at ASA. We just hit the ground running. I guess they just figured that we would learn each others names eventually. Of course the last time i was there in March the EALD counselors forgot to take us to our team so we missed orientation and just randomly joined them for lunch. This other girl and I were so embarrased.

Yes, I remember joining late. The first thing I said to my new counselor was... are you new? I really freaked her out because I had been there so many times and she was new. We actually got to know each other really well that week even though she was afraid that I was going to hang her out to dry because I had been there so many times. I think it actually made us good friends. She still calls me and we exchange e-mails a lot.
