Any Florida campers out there?

Post by musicexpressdj »

I was a Counselor at the US Space Camp in Titusville, FL from 1991-1992. I left mid May to join the US Air Force. Just looking to see if any of my team members are out there!

I was a counselor from 2000 - 2002 and worked the summer directly preceeding the closing of the camp... It was one of the best jobs I ever had!

do you still have your certificate? the date on mine says "July 18, 1997". don't know if that's the same time you were there or not. i was team Orion anyway.

did you do your mission on the Endeavour? at least i think that that's what they called the shuttle that was outside the training facility...the one with the theater in the cargo bay.

oh...and i don't know if you ever heard the phrase "the toxic waste dump" while you were there but that's what myself and a couple others nicknamed the cafeteria.

Parent/Child Florida

Post by Conan »

I took my nephew to the Parent/Child Program in Florida in 2000. We were on team Andromeda and our counselor was Ryan Smith. I remember thinking that it wasn't nearly as good an experience as at Huntsville.

The Astronaut Hall of Fame was purchased by the Delaware North company - the company that runs the Kennedy Space Center. The AHOF is still open and pieces of Camp are used in the ATX: Astronaut Training Experience.

I think it's only a day, yeah, but I haven't really checked into it much.

It's kinda sad that they'd shut down not long after their hab is built, but, I guess if you're constantly in the red you have to do something drastic to save yourselves. Sometimes that means closing up shop.

yeah. and ya know when i was there that place was jam packed. but i guess after 9/11 they started losing money on the place which sucks. strange though because of it's proximity to cape canaveral. one of my best memories from space camp florida was waking up at 6am to go and stand on the roof of the habitat and watch the shuttle come down and land silhouetting itself against the enormous rising florida sun.

My parents have the certificate, but I'll check next time I visit them. I don't remember what they called the orbiter, but the attraction was called "Shuttle to Tomorrow" and I did indeed have my mission there.

I had seen that advertised, but I wasn't sure if it was the same place or not. Thanks for the info. May have to go try it out.
