Countries at Camp

Post by monkeynautt »

I went to camp the week after international camp but there were still a lot of international this year. (we won't mention me but I was one). On my team there was a guy from Norway and a girl from England. On another team there was a guy from Canada (it's funny because he lives about two hours away from me and we meet in Alabama). On another team there was a guy from England (the one who didn't want to watch Batman) and three really hot guys from Panama. Since I arrived early the internatinals were still at camp the night I arrived. They got to go shopping so were not there when I arrived. They also slept in Hab 1 the extra night while the earlies slept in 2. They kept us kind of separate and we never really saw them.

Well ive been to camp acouple times with international groups. When i was their in 91 we had a group from vietnam. I dont thik their were any there in 93. In 96 i was there during the international week we had groups from all over. One that stands out is a group from australia mainly because they were just strange at times. It was just before the 96 olympics in atlanta and the torch was passing through huntsville that week. If i had been at Academy Level 2 instead of AC i could have participated in some of the olympic torch activities that year. But anyway the only other international person i met was from Spain. I met him the last day AT AC when i stayed over an extra night and so did he and one other girl.

In 2001 there was a girl on our team from Canada and a girl from Germany. This year we didn't have any internationals on our team (unless you count Jessie who was from like outer space). Also in 2001 we had a girl who was Egyptian although she was an American citizen living in Florida.

Multinational teams

Post by SpaceCanada »

Any given week at Space Camp could be an International Camp without all the frills they throw in for the official International Camp each year. Being a foreigner myself, I felt right at home with my multinational teams.

In 1998 I attended a summer session with a handful of other ASA teams. Some of my fellow campers were from Hungary, England, and somewhere where they speak Portuguese, I think it was Brasil, but it could have been Portugal...

In 1999 we had an even more international team, comprised of two Canadians, two Australians, and some crazy Americans. Now, it's rather humourous when the Aussies and the Canadians team up against the Americans for the week. From sabotaging the helicopter simulator missions (we spent an afternoon out at AC), to scaling up the trusses on HAB1, we could prove to be quite the handful ;-) Even in the mess hall we caused a ruckus trying to convince Americans that jelly is gelatin, jam belongs on toast; and plastic utensils cannot be called silverware! Such good fun!

The international blend of campers adds a lot to the camp, wherever you are. Whether it be the odd vocaulary lesson, tradition make-overs, or accent translations, it makes the week all that much more fun!
