Cell Phones

Post by DanM »

I am thinking about getting a prepaid cell phone for camp next year. Are they allowed, and how is the signal in hab1?

Yes, you can bring a cell phone so long as it is locked up in your room and only brought out in the morning before breakfast, during free time (if your counsellor allows), or at bed time.

Generally, any time when you would be allowed to use the pay phones to call home, you can use your cell phone to call home. Thus, keep it in your locker and do not bring it to any activities.

Definetely keep it locked, just like all your other stuff. but DO NOT bring it on any activities, a couple years ago, I made the mistake of leaving my cell phone in my Camelbak, and as we're going through our for real SAR (Search and Rescue) Mission, someone sent me about 5 text messages(pointless ones too) and I had my text tone set to Chewbacca. So we were in the middle of the woods, dead silent, and then suddenly, Chewbacca. My counselour was like "WTF IS THAT SOUND??? DO I HEAR A WOOKIE???"

No Sir, I dont know what you're talking about

I know you wont be doing SAR as a speenie, but still, you get the ponint

Nice. That's hilarious!

I would always keep my phone on vibrate, if not off. In fact, the only reason I kept it in my pocket is that I'm a creature of habit and it would drive me insane to not have the weight there.

I never had a problem with councilors and cell phones. I called home almost every night on mine in the hallway of hab1 because the signal sucks in the rooms. (metal rooms and cell phones don't mix)

Want a really good reason not to bring your cellphone?

During landing of our 2nd mission PS1's wife called on his cell phone when we were about 2 minutes from KSC. It was the funniest thing ever.

"I can't talk to you now, we're landing the shuttle!"

It should be on our video but I haven't watched it yet.

HA! Funny thing, reminds of a similar event to one at my own little "space camp". Jim was putting in the simulator and we kept having problems with it and the electricity. I went to the front office of the school and said, "We're putting in the space shuttle and the power keeps going out". The guy (I think maybe an advertising manager) said, "could you say that again, I don't think I have ever heard that sentence before." LOL!

Cell phones at Camp?! My goodness how times have changed. Some teams I had were a handful. I could only imagine what it would have been like with cell phones too. LOL

Not sure how I'd react to a call in the middle of a mission... :?

And we were laughing so hard that the pilot and commander couldn't use the headsets to talk to each other.

I really have to see this mission. I only watched team Challenger's mission so far. Maybe I should spend some time away from my computer sometimes!

I always have to fight with my h.s. students re: cell phone use. But even though I think all the kids I work with now have CD players, iPods, cell phones, etc. I just mentioned it once. They're still kind of a handful.
