Hand to Hand Combat

A place for ACers to come and hang out after a hard day of escape-and-evade or survival training.

Hand to Hand Combat

Post by maverick »

I remember a friend of mine that two of the counselors showed aspects of Marine Hand to Hand Combat- they showed the throat jab, from what I can recollect.

I dont think many parents would send their kid to a camp to learn to kill.

Matt-

I have done martial arts for a while (and I am an advocate of self defense), and although I find violent video games fun, I would never kill or maim someone recklessly.

Killing is not a toy. It should be used with great care.

Please read the following articles to understand what I mean:

http://www.blackbeltmag.com/archives/bl ... 9/how.html

http://www.blackbeltmag.com/bbkids/feat ... l/jail.cgi

http://www.blackbeltmag.com/archives/bl ... ectsd.html

Note: This article has some elements of Zen (that I do not agree with) but it is still a good article.

I hope you take these to heart.

I agree with you 100 percent maverick. I studied martial arts for 4 years and although i could probably kill if i had to i would never do it just for no reason or even pretend it was fun.

Also, the message that started this thread is wrong- I must have been snorting pixie sticks when i wrote this- it should have said

A buddy of mine went to AC before I did and said that the counselors there showed him and the other campers some basic hand to hand tactics (I specifically remember him telling me they showed him a throat jab).

Jason-

I studied jujutsu (not Brazilian), tae kwon dork (I heard, however, ROK marines can kick butt), Shotokan, and I learned a few things that practices a similar style to yours (the kata are VERY similar).
Still, I am not a good fighter.

I wonder, who headed your style of shorin ryu (who is its grandmaster)?

I also know what the armed forces are studying currently in hand to hand combat:

Marine Corps- Marine Martial Arts Program (which is not that bad! In my 3 yrs of TKD we never covered a lot of the stuff that they teach!) They used to do LINE and aikido.

Army- Gracie Jiu-Jitsu

Rangers- Used to do Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, now they use LINE that the Marines discarded.

Navy- ???????? (My counselor said they learn grappling, boxing, and some basic manuevers).

Air Force- ???????? (I know Air Force Academy does pugil stick). I remember reading that the Strategic Air Command in the 1950s brought karate, aikido, and judo instructors to this country and also shipped trainees to Japan so they could learn the aforementioned 3 arts, along with taiho jutsu (police art). As a result of this judo became widespread across the country as the former instructors and servicemen started their own clubs.

The last i heard the grand master of our style i believe was Shoguro Nakazato or something like that. I studied under Keoshi (8th Degree black belt) Frank Hargrove. Which as i said before is the higest ranking america in that style, I doubt he'll ever make 9th degree. It took alot of persistence and fighting just for hime to be allowed to test for 8th. and hes definately not as young as he use to be and its showing.

Jason-

I found the website of your school

Wow! He has quite a history behind him.

http://www.usashorinryu.org/hargrove/index.shtml

Just wondering, how much did Kyoshi Hargrove and his staff focus on street self defense?

In general classes we really didnt focus on dtreet self defense. Although many of the techniques we learned could be used for such. They just didnt nessecarily teach it for street defense. They just taught it as a way to defend yourself in general . Although we did learn hoe to escape from ways people might grab you and did learn some thrown. We did alot of Kata though. I also competed in a few turnaments over the years.

I remember doing kata a gazillion times and then having no clue what I was doing - until I learned a few Bunkai/Tuite. It is somewhat similar to jujutsu. I found that jujutsu really helps with learning these and techniques of other arts. However, I think more realistic training is necessary to achieve a good goal of self defense.

I competed in TKD tournaments (WTF) about seven to eight years ago.

I also used to scare the girls/cheerleaders in PE class in high school by going into front splits (which I can't do now :( ).

I remember in Karate we had a certain code of conduct we had to memorise concerning when was apropriate and when it was not to use what we had learned.
