I attended Mach III in Alabama during June of 1999

A place for ACers to come and hang out after a hard day of escape-and-evade or survival training.

Post by maverick »

Hello forum goers,

I attended Mach III in Huntsville Alabama during June 14-18 or in June 7-11 in 1999,
my counselor was Captain America (blond former Navy guy, I remember his first name was Scott) aka Skeletor. Our team was the Black Panthers.

I found this site through yahoo.com.

I went to Mach 3 then known as Intermediate in July 1998. I honestly never thought i'd go to aviation challenge. The only reason i went was beause i wanted to go back to space camp and couldnt afford Academy Level 2 at the time so i went to Aviation challenge. I thought i'd be way out of my league being mainly a space person but i'm so happy i went i loved every minute of it. The counselors were great the team was great and it was one of the best weeks i can remember however i still have to say it ranks second to advanced space academy.

Well the only piece of advice i can think of right now concerns escape and evasion. I dont know if they still do it where they did in 96 i heard they moves it but if you do it on the opposite side if the lake from the main AC building watch out for the ravins in the woods its not too big but i found it he hard way.

Advice for AC

Post by maverick »

Space Nerd-

Make sure you bring sweatshirts and sweatpants, its going to be cold in those rooms. I mean, its basically Siberia inside those rooms at night! There is nothing you could do about it!

Also DO NOT RUN while in E&E- the thorns are three inches long. Use the crawl to move yourself.

Bring ski gloves or gloves of a similar toughness for E&E
training- that way while crawling you will be able to feel for the thorns.

Use your ears in E&E- these are your eyes in the darkness.

During E&E - when in doubt, do not move. If a counselor is so close to you, do not move a single bit.

I also know for a fact that Mach II's E&E is not the same as the one for Mach III - this was a point emphasized by our counselors.

If you are wearing glasses, have the eyeglass store make you a pair with totally black (not preferred, it silhouettes you at night ) or dark blue frames (what is called 'athletic glasses'). Look at photos of Marines or Army people with glasses in field training.

If you wear other types the counselor will tell you to put those away because they shine and reveal your camouflage (at least that is what happened to me).

My favorite part was E&E and patrolling, sims were not all that great in my opinion (if only I had more practice earlier, I would have enjoyed it more)

Their were alot of good things about AC. Escape and evasion was alot of fun. The sims were also good. and you have more freedom their overall it doesnt stick to a schedule as much and gives you more free time to swim, flirt or whatever. Heck even the food was decent except for the fact you had the same thing for lunch every day at AC. You dont eat lunch at the space camp cafeteria you eat it in the ward room over at the AC area. And every day you get a choice of Hamburgers, hot dogs or grilled chicken. The other meals are eaten at thte space camp cafeteria.

I remember the food at the cafeteria- it was mostly good- the best thing is you could drink as much soda as you wanted. Also in the cafeteria are the biggest strawberries I have ever seen (I did not eat those- such obviously genetically engineered foods scared me!).

Well either the foiod has improved since the last time i went in 98 or i just must be picky about food. I'll admit it was better than cafeteria food in high school though.
