AWACS anybody?

A place for ACers to come and hang out after a hard day of escape-and-evade or survival training.

yeah, that part is easy, but I think that there was something about a river that confused certain members of my flight.

Missions are boring if you do what you're supposed to do, then the debriefs aren't as funny, lol. :) I had majorly dysfunctional teams every time I went. Looking Glass Alpha 7... that's who we escorted. Holy cruddo, seems like yesterday.

All I know is that the next time somebody says "He is a much better pilot than you" I wont be trusting them. This kid could get us off the ground and usually back onto it in mostly one piece but the part inbetween was... special. I think we were out of the Top Gun running by the end of the first session. So then we sat around watching some movie about some drill instructor that was moderatly amusing for like four hours while the people who didn't suck got to fly. The topping on the cake is that the person I was originally supposed to fly with ended up winning Top Gun. lol. Oh the stories.

When you get your C5a carrier landing badge, then you a truely an AC SIM bad<beep>..

The AWACs is a no go. All the computers and hadware was purchased for construction, however funds where never alotted to AWACs building for the SIM Ops. They wouldn't do it for free. Sorry kids.

Taking off. Now there's something I never mastered during my one time in the sims... haha.

Yeah, Roger had the AWACs up and running on 6 computers in the tech room. However, he could never get the hours for his guys to set it up. You know how the techs are!

Techs never work for free and the Sprocket wouldn't authorize hours for completion of the project. Sorry, less fun for everyone.

Too bad I'm changing my major. I would have worked for free. I guess thats the nature of the job though. I guess its cool that they attempted to add something new even if it didn't quite get finished. Its a step in the right direction right?

wow the AWACS is still in progres, i havnt been to camp in so long now, when i was last there the AWACS was being built with the frame of the plane there and some of the electronics.

my last time we had a guy who claimed he could fly, he was even supposed to be getting his pilots license so we let him be flight leader. every mission ended in him leading us way off course. I miss AC a lot, wish i could go back but theres not much to be gained for an aero engineering major being a counselor at AC.

I'm a little confused as to how you think there's little to be gained for an AE working at AC or Space Camp. First off, so many of the counselors, especially during the summer, are AEs, that you make invaluable contacts. Secondly, you might find out about good opportunities that you weren't aware of. Plus, what place wouldn't think Space Camp is cool on your resume?

It's not as great as an internship with a leading company in the industry, sure, but it's not as bad as you make it out to seem.

i know space camp would look cool on my resume (and i would have a lot of fun doing it), but im just not sure how much relevance there would be to internships or jobs in aerospace design

don't let yourself get too narrowly focused on one thing. i did that for a while and missed opportunities I never realized how much I would enjoy them. Maybe it doesn't have direct relevance to your career as an engineer - but perhaps it will show you that you love kids, and you'll wind up volunteering later on in life to work with kids. Or something.

My point is don't think everything you do needs to be directly related to your future career - it's okay if you work outside the box.

Besides - meeting someone who you keep in touch with who later becomes an engineering executive at just the right time to help you with a transfer - well, that could be valuable.

I'll chime in here...I just started my first job out of college (go, me)...

Working at Space Camp played a huge part in helping me land it!

I definitely played up the teamwork and communication skills that one must possess / develop to do that job. And managers like to hear that you're not just a brain-on-a-stick because, unlike much of college, you can't do engineering work in a vacuum. It's as much about teamwork as it is good engineering.

It definitely set me over the top and got me the job!

...and those three months were some of the best I had gotten in some time. They still are!
