Early 80’s flight suit

Post by majtom7 »

This came up on eBay today. My guess is that it’s early 80’s vintage. The seller says that they think it’s a cotton/poly blend. Has anyone else ever seen one of these? The seller is taking offers.

Lack of pockets and exposed zippers looks like a late 80's up until about 1990 flight suit with patches removed. In 1991 they added the standard poscket arrangement seen on military and NASA flight suits and covered the zippers.

I have a 1991 suit that I've been using for comparison. I asked in the Facebook Space Camp Alumni group and they agree with you, 1988-1990. I am puzzled by the material, tho, as it looks different from the later cotton/poly blend. I searched for pictures of Flight Apparel Industries flight suits without much luck.

Here's another one that must be even older.

That first one has the Space Gear logos, so it's probably from the early 90s.

The second one is from the second batch made for space camp. Avirex, I think, made the first. That one has the first patches used and lacks the space gear logos, probably before 85 (I think) when the new logo patches started being made.

I'm returning this suit to the seller so you might want to keep an eye on Ebay for it again. It was in pretty good shape, just too tight in the chest & waist for me and too loose in the sleeves and legs.
