Science Museums

Post by Space Nerd »

The hab has been a little slow lately so I thought I would start a post on everybodys favorite science museums! Here are some of my favorites:

Impressions 5- Lansing's very own science museum with lots of awesome hands on stuff. In fact its pretty much all hands on stuff!

Great Lakes Science Center- An awesome science museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Also a lot of hands on stuff with many differnt themes.

Hastings Museum- Located in Hastings, Nebraska. It's highly unlikely that any of you have been there or even passed through Hastings as the museuem is just about the only thing there. However there were many really fun things to do there. We went there twice on our trip to Nebraska and we never do things twice so it was pretty good.

Obviously we will all put down the USSRC because they do indeed have scientific exhibits from time to time. These are just a few of my favorites so I ask what are your favorites?

I wanted to do parent/child with one of my nieces or nephews but none of them are interested in space. I took one of them to cleveland for mission to malls and he wasnt the least bit amused or excited. I was sad :(. I think i'll just steal a kid and take them lol.

Everybody always mentions how they didnt bring it to mall of america. The reason for this was that they only took it to malls owned by one guy. So thats how they chose. I think it would be cool if they could bring it back and take it to other malls! But it was cool and totally worth the 4 hour drive to get there.

Well i have to plug my own museum a bit if we want favorites. I volunteered here 11 years and worked here the last few months. That museum for those who don't know is the Virginia Air and Space Center which serves as NASA Langley's visitor center. Our website is http://www.vasc.org Sara has been there and she didnt even mention it here in her posts.

Ofcourse i also love the US Space and Rocket Center.

One other museum i've actually never visited but we have had several of their traveling exhibits come through our museum is the Ontario Science Center and if their museum is as good as their exhibits they must be awesome.

And of course the National Air and Space museum in DC is awesome wish i could get up their more often but despite popular opinion living in Virginia doesnt mean you are automaticly close to DC. We are a big state infact i live about 4 hours from DC.

I will add to Jason's comment about the Ontario Science Centre - it's amazing!!! They have a wonderful Museum of Civilation also. Oh, how I loved living in Ontario.. anyway... I like living in Alberta too.

Our local science centre, the Odyssium is pretty good for a small science centre. They recently rennovated the museum and it has some interesting exhibits, including an IMAX theatre, a star theatre, and a space exhibit. Mind you, they removed the Challenger Centre, my favourite part of the old space exhibit; so sad!

However, it is nothing in comparison to museums like the Royal Tyrrell Museum of dinosaurs in Drumheller, Alberta; the USSRC, the Smithsonian, KSC, or the Miami Science Centre. But hey, there are heaps of great science and space useums around the world. I hope that in time I will get to see many more of them!
