a yankee moves to Huntsville

Post by Hotdog »

Living down south (Hilarious)

This made me laugh till I cried. No Joke!

_Be sure and pay attention to the dates. This is hilarious but so true!!

A Diary Review: Moving South, 2007

May 30, 2007 :

Just moved to Huntsville, Alabama from Chicago, Illinois.

Now, this is a city that knows how to live!

Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings.

What a place!

I watched the sunset from a park while lying on a blanket.

It was beautiful.

I've finally found my home.

I love it here.

June 14, 2007 :

Really heating up.

Got to 100 degrees today. Not a problem.

Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car.

What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this.

I'm turning into a sun worshipper.

June 30, 2007:

Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today.

Lots of cactus and rocks. The yard is a breeze to maintain!

No more mowing the lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but

I love living in Huntsville.

July 10, 2007 :

The temperature hasn't been below 100 degrees all week.

How do people get used to this kind of heat?

At least it's kind of windy, but getting used to the heat and

humidity is taking longer that I expected.

July 15, 2007:

Fell asleep by the pool.

(Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body.)

Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do.

I learned my lesson, though.

Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.

July 20, 2007:

Morgan (our cat) sneaked into the car when I left this morning.

By the time I got to the hot car for lunch, Morgan had died and

swollen up to the size of a shopping bag and stank up the $2,000

leather upholstery.

I told the kids that she ran away.

The car now smells like Kibbles and shi**.

I learned my lesson, though. No more pets in this heat.

July 25, 2007:

The wind sucks.

It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!

And it's hot as hell!

The home air-conditioner is on the fritz,

and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he
needed to order the parts.

July 30, 2007:

Been sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights now.

The monthly house payment is $1,500 and we can't even go inside.

Why did I ever come here?

August 4, 2007:

It's 105 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today for a
cost of $900.

The temperature gets down to 78 degrees,

but this freaking humidity makes the house feel like it's about 95
degrees.

I hate this stupid city.

August 8, 2007:

If another wise ass person cracks, "Hot enough for

you today? I'm going to strangle him. [darn] heat.

By the time I get to work, the radiator is boiling over, my clothes

are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!

August 9, 2007:

Tried to run some errands after work.

Wore shorts and sat on the black leather seats in the ol' car.

I thought my ass was on fire.

I lost two layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and
ass.

Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat.

August 10, 2007:

The weather report might as well be a [darn] recording.

Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny.

It's been too hot to do anything for two [darn] months,

and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week.

Doesn't it ever rain in this [darn] desert?
Water rationing will be next, so I might as well watch $1,700 worth of

cactus just dry up and blow into the [darn] pool.

Not even cactus can live in this [darn] heat.

August 14, 2007:

Welcome to HELL!!!

The temperature got to 105 degrees today.
Forgot to crack the window and blew the [darn] windshield out of the car.

The installer came to fix it and said, "Hot enough for you today?"

My wife had to spend the $1,500 house payment to bail me out of jail.

Freaking South
What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here?

Ah the fun of being a yankee moving to the south. I've lived in the south for almost 14 years now and I'm still not used to the heat. I'm better off than I was, but it's still darn oppressive.

I sometimes tell yankees that it's a lot like living up north. There's a couple of months when it's just not fun to be outside. Except it's a different couple of months and for the opposite reason. Oh, and you don't have to shovel the heat like you do the snow. 8)

LOL wow who read my thoughts about this summer in huntsville. Just kidding but that is pretty acurate to what i experianced this summer. Funny thing is if it started 16 days earlier it would have been the exact dates of my time there.

You gotta love southern weather. Second week of school for Metro Nashville TN schools this year was half days due to 100+ degree weather. All of the students thought it was pretty funny.

Pretty funny, but most definitely an exaggeration. I'm a Yankee from Philadelphia living in Huntsville, and I believe it only got over 100 degrees here for a week in early August. I don't even remember if it hit 100 last summer; it probably did, but not for months! I am a self-professed sun-worshiper, so I do love it.

I used to live in Florida, which is hotter and hotter for longer.

I moved up to Boston from Florida a couple years ago and I'm planning on moving to Huntsville in about a year. Can't wait to get out of this freaking cold and back to a warm climate.

Heat

Post by Scooby »

I lived in Huntsville for 5 years and now live back in the Midwest. So I came down to visit this past weekend, to tell you the truth it was 10 degrees hotter and more humid when I returned Sunday late afternoon to the midwest...but I still remember those "water our kids" days.

During the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta someone rented a billboard near the airport that read "Welcome to Atlanta! Now GO HOME!"

Up until now I never thought of it as a public service announcement. :D

Having experienced the build-up to and clean-up from The <Copywrited> Games while I was a student at Georgia Tech, I assure you that the sentiment was fairly widespread. It's a neat idea to have the world (almost literally in this case) come to your town. It's another thing to actually have to deal with it. I wasn't there during the actual games, but there were many frustrations just from what I experienced.

I lived (and worked) in Atlanta the summer of '96. I worked my regular job during the day and was a VIP driver from 5 PM to midnight everyday beginning a week before the games started till a week after. It was the most fun I've had in a long time! I got to meet (and party) with the Australian Olympic Committee, one of the German OC members always requested me specifically (I speak a bit of German), so I got to drive the cute BMW, shuttled the US Synchronized swimming team around one night and my favorite story...I had the entire contingency from Namibia in an over sized SUV one night. Athletes, coaches and OC members, a total of 13 people.

My daughters were involved as well. The youngest carried the torch the morning of the opening ceremony and the oldest sold newspapers and during her lunch break would go down to the Park and swap pins, which she still has.

I still have my uniforms (including the very flattering 'skorts') and the other issued items, including a Swatch watch. The torch is mounted and hanging on the family room wall. Very unique souvenirs from a unique experience that I wouldn't trade for anything!
