Question
Is anyone going to the launch a few weeks from now? My ASA group was going to have a reunion there, but it didn't exactly pan out, what with school and houses and work and everything else going on.

Well, right now, I'm at camp, but when I get home on Friday I have 1.5 weeks to start/finish all of my 4-H projects. Then I have the 4-H fair the last full week of July. I also need to work on packing b/c I leave for school 6 weeks from today. I really want to come back to camp though. it makes me sad that this is my last trip.

What is 4H?
Also, I know exactly how you feel about last session... I might have to come back for some 3-day adult program this summer or something...
I'm also thinking about going for desperate measures and sacrificing most of my graduation money for Christmas Camp this year...

The less time spent in Orion Bay, the better.

Do you live in a big city MNathaniel? 4-H is well... Perhaps stargazer can explain it better. Its mostly a club of people who do things such as show animals and projects such as sewing/cooking/painting and so on. Around here they compete at the county fair though i dont know if its done that way in other places. Its a pretty cool organization. Sadly, i never got to be a part of it.

We have 4H here. I know lots of people who belonged to it at one time or another. I did more of the Scouts and Girl Guides route. I tried Air Cadets but I found many of the kids to be the snobby bossy rich kids who I didn't like. Thus, I'm back with the Girl Guides...

Mostly, at least it is here.
The members are usually farm kids, those who grew up on acreages, and and those from small towns.
I wish they had more 4H stuff near the bigger cities though, because city folk tend to be completely lost when it comes to handling/understanding big animals (milking a cow, riding a horse, etc.), making things from scratch (using hammers, nails, wood, metal, etc.), or crafting textiles (knitting, sewing, crochet, etc.).
Scouts and Guides have the potential to do all this stuff in their programmes too, but it is highly reliant on who the leaders are and whether or not they are brave to enter such territory.

Wow, it's interesting to listen to you guys all describe 4-H because in one way or another you're all right. 4-H was originally started to teach kids about agriculture and farming. It then was expanded to include more of the homemaking skills such as sewing and cooking. Now, it has been expanded even more to include more of the city kids. My projects include Genealogy, Personality, Child Development, Collections and something else. My sisters take projects such as Health, Photography, etc. At the beginning of the year we select our projects and receive our project books. The project books teach us about the topic we are "studying" (for lack of a better term). You must complete your project book in order to exhibit at the county fair. Exhibiting at the county fair is very similar to a science fair. You prepare a presentation/display about what you studied and present it to the judges. They then award ribbons (blue, red, white, and green). Projects receiving blue ribbons are then eligible for selection as an honor group project. The projects in honor group are then divided up by division and a champion and reserve champion is awarded in each division. the division winners are then eligible for grand and reserve grand champion of the project. The county is able to send so many projects in each category and division to the state competition. Your ranking determines whether or not you are selected to compete at the state level (It's usually the champion of each division).
