What is this patch?

Post by p51 »

Does anyone have a clue what patch is being worn on the far left person, right above the nameplate spot? I have never seen a patch like that before:

Unrelated, note the second person from the right, she ditched her visitor center patch and put on a white-bordered US flag. From first glance at the suit and the age of the person wearing it, I thought she was a real astronaut until I zoomed the image in and saw it was a SC suit...

Thanks, I'd never seen one before.

I had the goal of getting all the program patches... Then I realized that no one exactly knows what all is out there.

Good point. How many times have the people here have been surprised to see something they'd never heard of?

My recent academy patch? I don't think anyone knew where that one was from. I'm still curious.

Yes, he did. Mighty fine job he did too!

In my post above I was referring to this patch:

It's an odd one. Nobody knows when it was made or what it was for. Any ideas?

I will venture a guess. It is only a guess.

As I recall, before it was Space Academy, there was Space Camp I and Space Camp II. Right around the time these became Space Camp and Space Academy, respectively, Space Camp adopted their new logo (without looking at any references, I am fuzzy on how close these two things coincide).

I suppose it's possible that this is one of the first Space Academy patches, where they just had the new Space Camp logo and stitched "Academy" on the bottom to differentiate...

Yeah, that Academy one had me stumped. I thought it was odd enough when I recently found a Space Academy patch without the 'US' in front of the name...
Vincent, I think you're also forgetting the Movie SC patch recently spotted on eBay and how you'd thought it was a SC gift shop one but I pointed out how that's unlikely...

Haven't forgotten. I would just be incredibly surprised at a 'fake' Space Camp patch existing (outside of the movie patch, anyway).

I might be naive, but I can't imagine there's any profit in counterfeit Space Camp patches, given that the real ones are so readily available and reasonably priced!

I agree fully. If anyone's making a fake, wouldn't any of us have seen one before now? Surely there'd be more of them. Like the bad fake MACH 25 ones, they must have made thousands of those suckers. Yet this is the only one like mine to turn up in all this time?
I don't think there's much logic to support a fake, as someone had to go through all the trouble to make a handful of them...

The Academy name change started officially in 1987, which would have been right after the movie and the new logo design. So I'm willing to bet on Vincent's guess. They took the patches they just had already made and stitched "ACADEMY" on them to accommodate the new programs. Safe bet! That would also explain why there's so few of them that so rarely turn up on eBay.

That is Ruth Marie Oliver and that is her personal flight suit she wears for graduations. She wears many hats at Space Camp/Aviation Challenge. She has been the Day Program Manager and is once again the Aviation Challenge Program Manager, as well as being the person who directs and coordinates the training for all new Crew Trainers.

That's my guess as well. I meant to look back at old program guides to see if this was shown in any of them but haven't had the time.

Completely unrelated, but apparently somebody made a Twitter page for her flight suit a few years back 8O https://twitter.com/rbsflightsuit
