Possible New Space Camp Logo

Post by Vincent »

Yesterday Space Camp posted a new promo video to their YouTube channel.
Titled simply, Space Camp, and running for one minute, twenty-nine seconds, the spot highlights kids at Space Camp and all the wonderful things that make up the experience.

And then at the very end of the video, the Space Camp logo we all know and love morphs into this:

Image

Obviously, with the Space Shuttle fleet having been converted into museum pieces, the current logo has now offically become dated.

It should come as no surprise if/when an official changeover is made--be it to this logo or something else.

If this is to be the new logo of Space Camp, what do you think of it?

Ok i figured a new logo might be in the works but really i think i could do better and i have no art talent. Put the ISS put Orion or even a generic capsule but that is just ugly in my opinion.

Here is a quick comp I made using previous art created for WesL. I'm hoping this will get the attention needed to stop the amateur logo dead in its tracks so it can be done right by a graphic design professional (yours truly).

Now I'm off to go try to get this in the hands of someone who can make some decisions at Sprocket.

If they are going with this or another new logo it might explain why they are not selling the older design in patches and pins as discussed in a previous topic.

Keep in mind, it's entirely possible they aren't switching the logo at all in the near future, or this was just something they were kicking around.

At this point, who knows?

Very true there is also a good chance as i told Brian that this has been in the works for some time the decision and the logo may also be a done deal and regardless of opinion it may not change. decisions like these often are done alot frther out than most people realise.

That logo... sucks. No question. Apparently, the entire video was removed later the same day. I posted that the new logo was uninspired and weak, and someone else had already posted something along the same lines. I suppose that the people at camp realized this and hopefully are rethinking the new logo.

That said, the "pumpkin" suits are probably going to be a thing of the past soon as well. I'm okay with a generic astronaut look to the new logo, but the one they posted was uber weak. It reminds me of the mascott from the TV show, "Community"!

Yeah, not a huge fan of the new logo.

Kind of makes me sad that it's going to change although I understand the need for it to change.

Still, I would have rather seen something more dynamic than just a person in a space suit.

Well, all things considered the old logo is over 25 years old now (I still fondly remember the original Space Camp logo with its big bold letters, like what my original flight suit has). This one still harkens back to the logo designed for the Space Camp movie. So, perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to come up with something new. But, at the same time I prefer the classic look of red white and blue with a shuttle on it.

I think I might take a pass at doing my own logo as well. Maybe a contest to design the new Space Camp logo might be in order.

"Maybe", the man says? I think it'd be the best thing they could do. Heck, they push misison patch designs from campers and even copmete teams for the designs, so why not put it out to those who'd wear the patch at Camp?
Heck yeah, there should be a contest! :D

Personally, if the logo is to change, I'd consider consulting an ad agency to do the re-branding.

Whatever they change it to needs to be at least as iconic as what came before.

That's an incredibly tall order.

Here is another idea I came up with last night. It communicates exactly what Space Camp does, which is inspire kids to reach for the stars.

I've still got some tweaking to do on it, and I'm going to play around with it and see if it works with some different backgrounds and colors. Any input/ideas you guys have are greatly appreciated.

Where a professional graphic designer just like myself would be assigned to come up with a logo, and at a premium price. The difference here is I have the tools and talent to deliver ad agency quality design and I am willing to provide my services for free to see that this gets done right for all parties involved. I have informed the mothership of my offer and I am sending them ideas.

Here is the "reach for the stars" logo concept adapted to fit the style of the current logo:

Image

I made this one because I get the impression that the mothership doesn't want to stay too far from the look of the current branding.

What I like about your logo though is, if nothing else (and it's more than that), it's proof that it is absolutely possible to make a logo that isn't like the current one work!

Thank you Vincent. It is very difficult to reinvent a brand that was done so excellently the first time around, and has been around so long that it is engraved in everyone's mind. Expectations are so much higher when this is the case. It takes a "home run" in both the areas of concept and execution in order to make everyone forget the look of the previous brand.
