Patches designed by campers after the fact?

Post by p51 »

I was wondering why there doesn't appear to be a place for people who designed their own camp mission patches afterward? I'd bet there is a lot of good stuff out there if you know where to find it.
A simple internet searched turned up a few:

If things go well at camp, I'd like to see if my group wants to do something like this...

Hopefully you and your team will come up with your own patch design while you're at camp. This is a big part of the youth camp experience. My patch from 1992 is my avatar! I later had it made into a real patch by American Patch & Emblem.

I'll bring it up but seeing that it'll be a 3-day adult camp, I'm not sure how much interest there'll be.
I know a guy who does great work and is seriously into space patches (the guy made me a MACH 25 patch that is a dead-on replica and he's working on making replicas of the NASA Mission Specialist flightsuit nameplates) who has all the equipment to make patches, and if the group can agree on a design and wants to pay for the patches, I'll have him make as many as people want.
In fact, I should bring a sketch pad and some pencils for that, because I have a degree in commercial art and have designed a few logos and insignia for the military, contractors and such over the years. My own 'company' logo is my avatar, a modification of the US national insignia for aircraft with a paint brush running through the center.

That's excellent. I have a degree in graphic design myself and love doing this sort of thing for a living!

A patch design may or may not be part of the curriculum for adult 3-day sessions. I know it is part of the 3-day parent/child camps, as I helped one group design an Orion-based patch while hanging out in Otter's one night. I think it is a great Space Camp tradition that should be included in all of the programs!

Are you referring to James Holt (spaceguy5 @ collectspace) who does the Mach 25 patches? He made some dead-on replicas for me and Boomerang. He does top-notch work!!

I won't clutter up this thread with my work, but you can see some of the stuff I've done in the past here: http://www.scifihero.net/forums/index.p ... topic=5785

Yep, he’s a good guy, his MACH 25 patches were dead on (having recently compared it alongside a real one on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle) and cheaper than those awful Malaysian knockoffs. I got some 3X5 inch US flag patches from him, too (the very AB company ones that are used by NASA crews on their flight suits). You be the judge…
Replica in question:

Patch design was part of the adult 3-day. The patch isn't made, but the winning patch (each team makes one) is posted on the camp's website. If you have a way to get your team's patch made, I'm sure your fellow members would love it! I know I would for ours.

I've already thrown a blank sketch book into my bag just for this purpose...

Thanks Lin, good to know this tradition is still being carried out, even in the 3-day adult programs. Awesome!
