I did adult ASA last year over Labor Day weekend. It was a blast. As far as I can tell, there's not whole lot different for the adult program other than you have more freedom if you don't want to take part in certain activities or want to leave campus. You also have a few more options when it comes to food. What week are you going? A few of my team mates from last fall are headed back sometime in September. Wish I could go back this year but vacation time and budget are allocated for other activities.

I went to the Alumni camp in June. The one major difference between going as a youth and as an adult is the freedom. Adults are given the freedom to leave the center whenever they want. You can to participate in activites or just go off on your own. There is also no lights out. I want to one day go to the weeklong adult camp.

I really enjoyed the asult ASA programme. It was probably my favourite time at Space Camp. We were challenged more, we had more in-depth discussions, we got more perks (better food, free roam of the USSRC at night, ability to leave campus, etc.), and my team mates themselves were a fascinating group of people.

That is, not saying the youth programmes weren't good - they were - but I enjoyed adult camp the most!

I just signed up for ASA yesterday for August 17-22 this year. anyone else going around that time?
I been to Advanced Space Academy before in 1999 in June was on the Armstrong team but I forgot the counselors names and most of the teammates names too except a couple.

Anything I should expect different this time around since I am going to a Adult camp?

I know they upgraded the Training center floor with ISS modules.
Will I still be using Enterprise for the sims? I always wanted to command Discovery But Enterprise is fine.

Adult ASA uses Enterprise just like regular ASA does. You will see a new space station complex and it is used for ASA missions its is much larger than what they called the iss back in 99 i was at regular asa in 98. You will also use a new Enterprise mission control thats in a new location from 99.

Biggest thing with adult ASA is more freedom. You dont have a lights out you are free to come and go at night whether its to go out to a bar or something with teammates or to get other stuff done. You are not required to stay anytime and you can leave during the day as well if nessecary but i would stick around till the day's activities are done. You dont have to eat in the s[ace camp cafeteria you can use the one on the public side though you have to pay for ir over there. One piece of advice here is the camp cafeteria food os not as good as it use to be not that it was ever great. The food public side is somewhat better.

I didn't get to work ASA as i was an Ac counselor but from what i can tell the adult program is similar to the youth one ofcourse some of the stuff has changed. All space side programs are geared more toward ISS missions and shuttle missions to the ISS. You may have also noticed their are no more payload specialists track which also coincides with NASA in this day and age. I don;t know alot of program specifics but expect to get more in depth with an adult program and expect more freedom.

I'm not certain about how much more in-depth the adult program is than the youth program. When I went to adult ASA last fall, I was a bit disappointed by the depth which the lectures and missions went into. I thought that ASA was more academically rigorous when I went through it in 1991 and 1992 (it was called Space Academy Level II at the time). One of my team mates was a counselor around the time the programs changed (from Level I/Level II to SA and ASA) and he agreed that the academic portion was definitely toned down. And, he agreed that, to some extent, that was to the program's detriment.

That said, one other difference I noticed in the adult program is how the counselors treat you. I was the same at or older than a majority of the staff and, as such, was treated more as a peer than as a "camper". That allowed us to have some great discussions, especially during the mission training times for the missions later in the week. Since we didn't need as much time to actually be trained, we got into some interesting discussions with the staff which I don't think would have been quite as possible in the youth program.

I cant argue that one academicly things have definately been toned down in all programs since the 91/92 time frame. This began in the 96 97 period. Since he went in 98 he probably wont notice as much as a diffrence as you did there. It will also depend alot on your counselor. There are some really great ones there with alot of knowledge and unfortunately for some its just a job and they know what they need to get by. From what i saw though they seem to try to get the more knoledgable ones for the adult programs or atleast try to so you should be ok.

I did have very good counselors, especially Valerie, my day counselor when I was there. She was very knowledgable and did a great job with us. We had one special needs trainee on our team and all of the staff was excellent at working with her and making sure that the accomodations needed for her had the least possible negative impacts on the rest of the team. Everyone, from the staff at Area 51, AC, on the training center floor, team in the UAT were definitely first rate.
I was even able to get some special requests out of the dining hall staff...although it took a bit to convince them that I really did want salsa for my scrambled eggs.

Where I thought the program was a bit lacking was in some of the lectures, especially the space systems lectures and the lecture on science in sci-fi media. Also, during the missions there seemed to be a lot more emphasis on getting things done and less on understanding what we were doing and exactly why. But, again, I think that's a short coming of the program and not the staff.
