CANCELLING 12 day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Deimos »

Next year they're cancelling 12 and 6 day for advanced academy teams, and they're doing only an 8 day. I'm soo upset, i was so hoping to go for 12 days next year, 6 just ins't enough and neither is 8 days. I don't think they should stop it. What's your opinions on this?

Some discussion of this has been going on in the AC section of the forum. I wish they had even had an 8 day session when i was a camper there was a time when that wasnt even an option. And at ione time unfortunately that ended just before i attended ASA 8 days was the norm for the advanced program. 12 day from what i've seen working here this summer seems like a great program but aparently the powers that be feelb there is too much open space in that program and havent despite attempts found a way to fill it.

8 days works perfectly for adult advanced programs (one work week) but I can understand why others would want a longer program.

I can understand if Space Camp is having a problem finding enough sim time to deal with 12 day programs, but I don't understand not being able to find enough program time to fill 12 days, which is what I seem to be hearing here. NASA finds enough to keep ascans busy for a year of training :) .

I'd bet 12 day just doesn't fit well with other programs since it runs across weekend boundaries and doesn't neatly run end to end like 8 day camps do. This leads to problems scheduling the simulators and time on the floor.

Ultimately, Space Camp will respond to demand, and if there is enough demand for a longer program, they'll provide it. No telling what it will cost though.

Well from everything we are hearing down here there will be no 12 day session starting next year. Though filling all the space with quality stuff seems to be the biggest issue also guys consider this. Though your counselors for the most part love what they do and we love working with trainees, 12 days straight with the same team is very draining. Also only a few counselors are advanced trained each year This puts alot of work on counselors and most enjoy the weekend in between teams though many will still have to work in some role on weekends it gives them a break from being responsible for 18 kids at a time.

Is this job fun for us? Do we enjoy it for the most part? Yes but some counselors will be working several weeks of 16 hour days with little or no break. This job can be extremely draining those of us who stay do so because we love what we do.

So losing 12 day sucks true but remember you guys only see the surface of what goes on at camp. Your counselors though we love our work need a break too. So remember the people who make this camp really work are benefiting by this as well. If your counselors are alert and running on all cylinders you will get a better experience out of camp. If they are tired exhausted and dragging everyone suffers. Though i have never heard any of this given as an official reason for the cutting 12 day programs it does benefit many people.

Ah, but the USSRC had a robot once... back in 1998 and 1999 at least. Its name was RAD 1. It didn't tell us what our next activity was either, it just greeted people to the MSFC Visitor Center.

I wonder if it was the same one from when I was a counselor in the early 90s.

It was between the gift shop and the MSFC Visitor Center wall. I wasn't there in the early 90s so I couldn't say for sure. :-)

I say they just build Jinx and set him loose in the museum. Then we can all get a chuckle when we hear "what the hell is that!" come across the museum floor :)
