Spanky went to Space Camp so long ago...

Post by Joker »

In honor of the 25th Anniversary of Space Camp, and the fact that our very own Spanky was in the charter class, we're duty bound to offer some historical perspective.

So, I propose we each provide some historical significance. I'll start:

Spanky went to Space Camp so long ago....

- his graduation certificate says "Alabama Space & Rocket Center." Because Alabama was still in the Confederacy.

- he thought having Space Camp on his resume would help him get a scholarship with Confederate Air Force ROTC.

- the rocketry lectures featured new developments in gunpowder technology, and some fundamental breakthroughs by an Englishman named Congreve.

- his team photo was a sketch by da Vinci.

- his gift shop flightsuit was Mercury-program surplus. Size "chimp." Had a slight banana odor. Still does.

- he parked his ride in Zach Bergstrom's parking spot. Space Camp was, of course, his father's idea. But it was worth it for the chariot, don't you think?

- Space Shot was a trebuchet with bucket seats.

- Water survival class was taught by Noah.

...that Abraham Lincoln gave the first, and now, infamous 565 speech.

"If your kids are asleep by the time you reach Interstate 565, call us back and we'll refund your money."

...he watched the first IMAX movie by wearing an 8mm projector on his head and sitting 18 inches from the screen.

...the cafeteria was still named Pancho's Happy Bottom Riding Club

...Spanky's team name was "Primordial Protoplasm"

...Spanky's team counselors: Day Team Leader: Adam, Night Team Leader: Eve

...a clothing package from the Gift Shop contained a breechcloth and spear.

...he flew into the 'OLD' Huntsville airport, downtown. Orville Wright was the pilot. He got to double as passenger AND copilot.

...his flight suit patch had a V-2 rocket on it....and the words "London or Bust"

...while going through the line at the cafeteria, SPAM was the only thing on the menu. (In the spirit of Monty Python, SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM...you know the melody)

...the gates to ASRC were 25 feet high and made of steel. To keep the radical "Earth is Flat" mob from storming the building...
