Is the intrepid simulator at camp named after the shuttle in storming inrtepid? And what program uses it?

Moot point.

Intrepid is now Endeavor.

They took Endeavor out of the TCF...Endeavor is dead. Long live Endeavor.

Dan,

Intrepid was named after the Apollo 12 Command Module. That mission was a fave of the SC staff at the time.

I seem to remember we voted on it - Intrepid won out over Constitution.

Boy if you're old school space camp then what does that make me. I was there the year endeavour was brand new and i mean the original endeavour. Heck at that time the real Endeavour hadn't even flown yet. Sorry i don't consider 2001 old school space camp. When i think old school space camp i think the days when Ed Buckbee ran things. The days when Advanced Space Academy was called Space Academyn Level 2 and ever session was an 8 day program at that level. Back when the closest thing we had to space shot was the maneuvering pod and the SSMT gave campers the feel of the guy running around the wheel space station in the movie 2001. And when one of the space station modules had Freedom painted on the side.
Thats old school space camp.

In 2001: A Space Odyssey Frank Poole is actually running around the centrifuge in the command module of the U.S.S. Discovery, but I digress.

The SSMT....those were the days.

Ooh... the SSMT is so much fun! I didn't have the chance to use it at Space Camp but they have one in Space Camp Spatiale Canada and I can't remember where I used one elsewhere - a science centre someplace.

I think it is funny to hear kids call 2001 old-school too... I went in 1998 and 1999 and it was a different time then but not nearly as different as the 80's and early 90's. I remember looking into Space Academy Level 1 at first, then Level 2 as I saved more money, and things changed again when I registered and was notified the programme changed names to ASA. Space Camp has changed a lot, for better and worse, but it is the adaptations it makes over time that keeps the camp so great.

and i thaught holy crap, im 18.

theres not going to be many more space campers who were born in the 80s.

thats why i put it up.

if i knew it would piss people off i wouldnt have put it up.

as of right now its gone.

be happy.

i just posted some pictures and i get yelled at.

god ur worse than my dad LB.

and in 1999, i was 11 years old and my parents wouldnt let me go to space camp. as much as i wanted to.i had to wait till i was 13.

Old School.....ya'll have no idea. Old School is 1982 Space Camp. Our cockpit was a plywood box with some instruments and an old TRS-80 style computer. Old School is when Space Camp Level 2 was before Space Academy....back when Discovery was the new kid on the block....(I got to fly her first mission). How about the 10 Day Space Academy Level 2....living in the marriott as our dorm and flying Atlantis (still in her SpaceCamp movie form). 1996 is not Old School....wait till it's been 25 years....then you can talk old school.

I assure you LB206 and myself weren't making comments to hurt your feelings in any way whatsoever. We were merely joking because what you call 'old school' is what we call new stuff! It's not that we took offence, but rather we like to remind everyone of the 'way back when' memories we have. It's all in good humour, sorry if you felt otherwise. I went to Space Camp with some kids born in 1979!

Now Spanky... he did the true old-school Space Camp back when it was first created! Hats off to Spanky! He probably laughs at LB206 and I when we talk about 'bak-in-the-day' 1998. :-P

Here is another Old School thought for you....

The original Space Camp area was right next to the Saturn 1/1B, in the Teacher's Resource Center. We had 11 tables and our teams were the planets of the Solar System with the Sun and Moon as the 10th and 11th teams. I remember our tour of the museum. I got my RL-10 engine lecture from a young (in my mind) Konrad Dannenberg. Now that's Old School.

I don't say these things to upset ya'll. It's all relative to when you went. For those of you who went in 1996-1999....it has changed....more than you expected. But what I have seen in the last 25 years is unreal. You have to understand....in my mind the shuttle is still the hot bird to fly but it's "Old School" to many. Wait until Space Camp goes into the Moon and Mars programs....and AC gets into UAV programs....WOW.

Do you realize the USAF is looking for people to fly the UAV's as badge UAV pilots.....sitting in a trailer with a computer screen, stick and throttle.....sound familar?

You next generation have to make the push and demand for what you want Space Camp to be. Good Luck!!

UAVs! I'm suddenly reminded of a Dos Gringos song!

"They shot down the Predator, that's one less slot for me.
They shot down the Predator, and it filled my heart with glee."

Or

"Or if you're stuck in UAVs, then my advice to you.....
(can't honestly repeat any of this line...just use your imagination....)

Seriously, though.

Spanky is right. Much has changed since the dark days before Aviation Challenge. :D I can't wait to see how well the CEV programs are integrated along with the Tiger Team recommendations from 2000.

i really didnt mean it to be mean at all. I just found it funny that what you consider old school is 3 years after my last yo8th trip to camp. As for years granted i wasnt there in 82 but i'm closer to it then alot of the people here my first trip was 9 years later in 91. A few other diffrences in those days Space Camp wore clolored cisors space academy wore a black ball cal with US Space Academy embroidered in gold and academy level 2 wore the same one with scrambled eggs on the brim. The log books were much bigger and had alot more information in them. and he first year i was here they had russian space hardware on display as part of a special exhibit. And Columbia was not only still on the training center floor but still in use infact still was till my 98 trip. and for your information i was born in 1979 also. but seriously i didnt post it to be mean. And as of now i'm planning to try to go to one of the adult alumni weekend sessions for the adult academy. Unfortunately i cant affordd the week long one but i'm going to be part of the 25th anniversary one way or another. Unfortunately the marriott only hads 169 dollar rooms available now for the weekend of the opening of the anniversary. And for easier accessable reasons i'll probably stay at the marriott even if i go to one of the weekend camps. But i am planning to go back sometime probably in july.

You can still see Russian exibits. They have one at the California Science center right now. They have Sputnik 1. I want to go down there to check out their air and space display but LA sucks. Too much trafic and it is really easy to get lost and end up in the bad part of town. If you are ever in the area I recommend you check it out. After comming from Space Endeavour Camp the year before I saw this thing that looked like an MAT. I love ridding those things. Well it turned out that that is not what it was. You sat in the seat, were given joy sticks put a pair of those glasses with a TV screen in it (whatever they are called) on and away you go moving in whatever direction. It only sucked because apperently the screen cut out when I started. It was too late to stop it. It was suppose to be you going through space. If they still had that there I would definatly risk the chance of getting lost to go up their again.

Sorry a bit of topic but it started out relative, sorta :?

One of the best places I've seen with flown Russian hardware is the Kansas Cosmosphere. They have a ton of stuff - I especially like the full size Apollo-Soyuz Test Project display.

Did Intrepid replace the old Columbia? What happened to Columbia? I flew my first Space Camp mission in that bird as a Payload Specialist...

From what i can tell thats what seems to have happened. Ironicly they took Columbia out a few months before the accident destroyed the real one.
