Space Camp on Sept. 11

Post by Kemara »

OK. Gang. Here's the article I wrote about my Sept. 11 experiences at space camp, it ran with several photos of both my team and myself. I'll try to get the whole thing onto the web one of these days. Oh, the headline wasn't my idea. :)

Flying High in the Face of Terror.

I suppose in the months and years to come we will ask each other: Where were you? Where were you when you heard about the terrorist attacks?

I was finishing breakfast in the cafeteria at U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville,
Ala., along with 17 other adults. We'd come to live our dream of being
astronauts for a week (Sept. 9-14), running space shuttle missions, experiencingweightlessness, having lessons in solar physics and generally immersing ourselves in the space program. Space Camp is a fantasy camp, so when someone said a plane had hit the World Trade Center, we didn't believe it. It had to be part of the dream, a dream which was rapidly turning into a nightmare.

We were just sitting down to build multi-stage model rockets when a staff
member came in and told us we could watch TV in the counselors' ward room. We never did finish the rockets. We crowded in front of the TV for about 2 hours, arriving just in time to see the first tower crumble. I couldn't believe it, no matter how hard I tried. Campers wandered in and out of the ward room at all hours for the rest of the day, but for the most part we stayed on schedule.

Having such a tight schedule was strangely comforting, because we were kept so busy we couldn't think. We generally agreed that we were glad to be at camp. It felt like a very safe environment, filled with people whose job was making sure of our safety. My only real moments of fear came upon hearing that the Army's nearby Redstone arsenal was a potential target for further attacks. The Space and Rocket Center and Space Camp are on land leased from the Army, so that included us in the target area.

The staff were wonderful about letting us use camp phones and computers to get in touch with friends in the New York and Washington, D.C. areas. People with canceled flights were welcome to stay in the dormitory and eat in the cafeteria as long as they needed to at no extra cost. "We won't just kick you out on the curb,"
counselors told us.

The week went on with simulated missions, SCUBA diving and plenty of team building. We really got to know one another as friends, brought even closer by tragedy. I think we all wanted to do something to help, to remember the events of that week. After some discussion, we created our team patch as a memorial. Each team creates a patch, in the same way shuttle astronauts do, to represent themselves and their mission.

Our patch is based on a black mourning ribbon with our team name, Kennedy, along one side with the date of our graduation, Sept. 14, at the top. The other side has 18 stars for each member of the team and 9-11, the date of the terrorist attacks. Inside the ribbon, the shuttle lifts off from
Huntsville, Ala. We wanted this to show how, at graduation, we were leaving the fantasy of Space Camp and going out into the world again. Creating the patch was very moving, and everyone had a sense that this was something we needed to do.

We also sent a copy of the patch with one of our team members, Tony, who will be traveling to New York as part of a firefighter honor guard. He'll
leave it at one of the memorials in the city, as a little something from all
of us. It's not much, but it is a reminder that Space Camp is a place where
you can still dream.

I remember the Challenger disaster of 1986. Seven astronauts were lost while we watched in horror. No one thought the space program would recover from such a blow, but it did. And we will recover from this too, remembering those who also "slipped the surly bounds of earth to touch the face of God."

I was lucky to be near my family that day, too. It was a very emotional day for me. I will never forget.

I was in school when it happend and every room has TVs in it because we have a news program at 10:30 and i remember being at my locker and someone saying something about bombings and did you hear about the towers? Then i went to my geometry class and the tvs were on and i just sat there in disbelief. It was horrible. I remember thinking i wonder if camp will close and how far away from my family i was going to have to be if something else happend. We called camp several times in the next few days and they told us that it would stay open. So i went down there only a few days after september 11th. It was really scarey to think about being so close to the arsenal during times like that. Lots of things were changed from the previous years that i was there. They had guards checking the bottoms of your car when you enterd the muesems parking lot and guards checked my bags and such before i could go to the hab and enter the musem. they also moved us to the little kids hab because it was a little safer. The tour to the arsenal and picnic was closed. And they had a big army helecopter that patroled the area regularly. It didnt change my over all camp experience at all just made me a little nervous but greatful that they would do so much to help protect the public and campers! :)

I was getting ready for school and went into the living room where it was on the news. I saw the plane hit the second tower and then collapse. At school we were listening to the radio when the first tower hit collapsed. I was so worried all day because a guy from my team lives in New York and went to schoolo near the Towers. In every class we talked about the attacks. It was a horrable day.

I was at work that day. It was a Tuesday and that day at noon, the pastor of the church where i work was to have a birthday luncheon with all the employees. Well that church has 27,000 members so its quite huge. My Dad(who also works there, in a different department) came around the corner while i was steam cleaning carpet. He said the twin towers had been bombed, and that news was vague. He said there was a fire, but thats all he knew. 15 mins later, he came around and said there was a second fire. Later he said they had collapsed. I couldn't believe it, because I had seen them only months before. Well I didn't do much work that day, as I found a dark corner, with the back door to someones office, and he had his TV on. I stood there nearly all day and listened to what was going on. There were many rumors going around, especially about Iraq. The Pastor's luncheon was postponed, and they had a prayer service in the church sanctuary. I attended it with my Dad and my Mom and sisters also came out. I am not a person who prays very often, if ever, I must admit. But I knew it was something I should do. They showed Bush's press conference on the huge screen, and it felt like it was the end of the world. As soon as I got home I put out my flag. Something else I rarely did, I'm ashamed to say. There was a tear in my eye as I said the pledge of allegiance.

The one thing 9/11 taught me is never to take anything for granted. I took those buildings for granted. I took this country for granted. we all take our freedom for granted. like the Towers, these things may not be here tomorrow. A lesson learned the hard way.

On September 11th i was sleeping in that morning and enjoying it. I got a call from my dad and all he said is turn on the TV. I did a few minutes before the first tower collapsed. The rest of the day i just watched in disbelief. Thankfully i didnt know anyone in New York or at the pentagon. I did know someone who was at space camp that week though and i had wondered what it was like to be down their that week. ofcourse now i know.
