Tests

Post by DanM »

From what I heard, you used to have to take tests to get into space camp. Obviously, they don't anymore, but a lot of people told me they wanted to go but couldnt pass the math tests. Does anyone here know what the tests were like or have copies of the tests?

Maybe it was for a scolarship there, or some special program or something.

Well i went to space camp at a time when most people consdered it to be for onlythe best and brightest kids in the united states for a good example of this read the book "A Smile as Big as the Moon". However i can say there wasno test even back then i'm talking the 1991 and 1993 trips and there was none in 96 or 98 definately but by the whole best and brightest thing turned more into anyone who would pay the money. I think there has been a long time stereotype about space camp that you need to be some kind of math genius or science genius to go if that were the case i never would have gone. I'm good in science but suck at math. I do remember for both my 91 and 93 trip they asked you to get the signatyure of a science teacher or administrator not sure it was really a requirement but i got the impression it was more to let the school know you were attending and see if they might give you extra credit or something. I'm thuinking the test may have been a parent's way of getting out of paying the high cost of going to camp.

There were no tests for scholarships in 1998/9. I had to write an essay and submit it with a copy of my grades and teacher recommendations. I believe the same scholarship requirements still apply; no test.

You may want to ask one of the counsellors on here who attended the original camps in the early 1980s.

Yeah. I took a test last year to get into space camp.... It was like thus:

If you had an employee steal from you do you give him another chance or terminate his employ immediatly?

A)Strongly disagree
B)Somewhat disagree
C)nuetral
D)Somewhat agree
E)Strongly agree

All I know is that I passed. there were 80 or so questions a lot like that....

Wow, I'd flunk that test with a big goose egg.

I typically write my own answers beside the multiple guess questions if I do not like the given options.

Maybe it's only counselors that have to take the tests?

Counsellors have to write (and pass with good grades) many tests as part of their training. Belive it or not, some counsellors know little about space and aviation before they arrive at Space Camp for training.

There were plenty who knew little about space or flying. There are some that are like encyclopedias (myself included...that is my profession though) I know a few that were terrified about the tests during our training...
