To quote CDR Riker "I plan to live forever." By the time any of us have to worry about this (I hope) there will be lots more choices as companies like SpaceX get their vehicles up and running. In fact, you could probably send a small vial of ashes to orbit right now if Bigelow repeats its ...

I think des's comment about cross-cultural communication starts to get to the core of the issue. It's really three way. The culture of the adults (which given the range of ages, can be several cultures in itself), the culture of the councilors, and the culture of the kids with which they normally wo...

Monica, I am impressed by everything you have done (including getting up at 2am to avoid the sprinklers). I don't know if you read the other threads here, but I have put a (near) full sized set of flight deck panels up at http://rkolker.com/enterprise Kinkos will print them (they fit on 24 inch wide...

Counseling Adults

As a multi-time adult attendee of space camp, I've found some counselors "got it" about dealing with adults, and others just didn't have a clue.

For some of you who have been on either end of this equation, what do you think works when dealing with adults at space camp?

8 days works perfectly for adult advanced programs (one work week) but I can understand why others would want a longer program. I can understand if Space Camp is having a problem finding enough sim time to deal with 12 day programs, but I don't understand not being able to find enough program time t...

Okay, I had the good folks at Kinkos scan it in for me. It wasn't expensive. They told me printing would be 50 cents a square foot. It all fits on 24 inch paper. I put it up at http://rkolker.com/enterprise . The front (F6, 7 and 8 ) is in zipped PDF format, everything else is a PDF. Since it was or...

Hey Fellas, I have something that you might be interested in that is along these lines. Its a book called the Space Shuttle Operator's Manual by Joels, Kennedy, and Larkin. It has many large diagrams of the entire flight deck layout, an entire script and detailed step by step procedures for launch ...

Wow! I highly doubt we will get that close. It's like my answer when people ask what the best viewing site is for shuttle launches and I say about 150 feet above the pad, lying on your back. The story behind that picture (and the other one, which is in front of the rescue baskets) is that I managed...

IMHO, their priority isn't Skylab, it's getting the Saturn V building done, and Skylab will sit outside deteriorating until either someone with clout gets involved or it's reached the point of no return. It's a shame the volunteer crew was not allowed to finish. They'd have the renovation done by no...

Those are some good food suggestions. You're making me hungry. ;) Well, I used to love Schoolies for shrimp when it was above the bait shop in Port Canaveral, and I understand the Moon Hut is closed, which was worth it for the atmosphere if nothing else. There's a good place for breakfast and Gyros...

My first version of the "wall" was printed out on 11x17s, followed by lots of jigsaw puzzle work. The next year I got it blown up on a large format copying machine at Kinko's, and that's the version I have now. The whole forward panel is one piece, for example. I noticed recently that Kink...

One thing to remember about KSC, it is a game preserve and there's lots of game - from gators to wild hogs to lots of snakes and lizards. I'd guess that's why the long pants and close toed shoes mandate. The Banana Creek viewing site is a nice place to watch from. One thing to watch for - the shock ...

Shuttle Cockpit Trainer

Back when I was going to Space Camp regularly, I used a near full sized printout of the shuttle cockpit panels as a trainer, since we could never get enough time in the actual trainers (and I could start practicing at home before camp). We used to call this "flying the wall", and we used t...

I'm having a good time thinking about Pongsats. Popping corn in space: Do you need heat if pressure goes to zero? If you pop corn in a vacuum does it pop bigger? If you expose popcorn to space and it doesn't pop, how will it affect the popping of the returned corn back on earth? Various things you c...

We've had several Canadians on the team at various times. Note the appropriate flag in the background as well.

Are you aware of JP Aerospace's Pongsat program? http://www.jpaerospace.com/pongsat/index.htm Student experiments flown to the edge of space by balloons and launched in rockets.
