Re: Train LIKE an Astronaut

I just copy-pasted all of my posts in this thread to a word document, times new roman 8pt, standard 1" margins all around. 8 pages. 6583 words. My earth science professor told me I could have extra credit for writing a couple of pages. Cool! I printed out the document so my mom can read it. I'l...

Re: Hab Windows

I'm bummed to hear that this was a monetary loss for them. I won't pretend to know how much it costs, but we didn't actually have the upgraded food they mentioned, and our 6 day was more than a kids 6 day, so what cost so much more that money was lost? I actually slept really well in the hab. I pref...

Re: Hab Windows

Trust me, those rooms are updated. That's very sad to hear because those rooms are much the same as they were when I first went to camp in 1991. I agree. I just got back from the adult ASA and my room - 306 - was almost unchanged from when I last went. Only changes from when I went as a kid was tha...

Re: Train LIKE an Astronaut

Well I'm home, and suffering from a severe case of post camp blues. Once graduation is over, there is a distinct change from having every moment of your life scheduled to having this sudden onset of this magical thing called "free time". Many of us looked lost. I still feel odd not having ...

Re: Train LIKE an Astronaut

Today we had our LDM. I am EXHAUSTED mentally and physically, so forgive me for not providing the details tonight. I'll try to type that up tomorrow maybe on the plane or when I plop into bed at home late tomorrow night. For now, just a few notes. We weren't specifically given the option of climbing...

Re: Train LIKE an Astronaut

Today I was given my call sign. Who gave it to me? None other than Astronaut Bob Springer. Yep. I was given my call sign BY A FREAKING ASTRONAUT! How cool is that?! I was given the name "Gimbal" for correctly answering that the SSMEs gimbal is what actually causes the orbiter to roll after...

Re: Hab Windows

My room, 301, has a regular style door rather than a cool looking portal one, and it also won't close. This is my first time in hab 1 so I couldn't tell you what's changed in these rooms, but the paint does look like it's fairly new (as in probably done in January when my group wasn't able to stay h...

Re: Train LIKE an Astronaut

Your wish is my command. I brought along my laptop so I pulled the photos off my SD card, but I am running off my hotspot so I don't want to eat up allllll my data uploading photos, but here are a select few to get started. I have about 170 more, though that sure isn't very many considering we're no...

Re: Train LIKE an Astronaut

I just have to add one thing. It just started raining, and in the hab it sounds SO musical, haha. It really sounds like someone is dragging thousands of tin cans behind them, but they make pretty clank clank noises. Ahhh, and there's some thunder. Now maybe I can go Zzzzzzz.....

Train LIKE an Astronaut

So here we are having finished day 2 about 30 minutes ago. I've taken a shower to get the chlorine out of my hair and crawled into my bunk to wind down before I crash. I figured I'd come type up a little bit of what we've been up to on Team Columbia. This week there are 3 adult teams: two train WITH...

I would looooooooooove to do that but I'd have to pay quite a bit for the privilege.

Re: B-17 was flying near my home on Labor Day...

I totally missed this post, but I have photos inside and outside of that exact B-17 from two years ago! I whacked my head on a bulkhead inside and had a big knot (and a small cut) for a few days, lol. The B-17 has always been my favorite plane, and that was the first time I got to see one in person....

Re: Less than a month away from ASA!

I'll be there October 11-16, training with an Astronaut. I'll be driving up from Birmingham, AL on the 10th and staying at the Marriott that night. Looking forward to meeting everyone, and hope to see a few of you at the bar Saturday night. Feel free to PM me and I'll send my contact info if anyone...

Just saw The Martian!

Fantastic movie, really enjoyed it. It stuck to the book well for the most part. I can't wait to see it again, hopefully at camp with a group of fellow trainees.

Okay I finally got it to go through via one of those free fax sites. Hopefully it actually worked! I'll bring the form with me anyway though, just in case.

Re: Less than a month away from ASA!

Can you verify if my SCUBA form was received? I know all my other ones are filled out. My real life name is Jennifer Henley :-) Jennifer, I'll have to get that answer on Monday. Our dive master is out of the office today. Jennifer, I got an answer from our dive master and double checked with our re...

Despite the confusion over the "tracks", I am soo thankful for the amount of communication we're getting. Still excited! Can't wait!

Re: Less than a month away from ASA!

You make a great point about why we even have DSLRs. I am leaning toward bringing mine. I got a spiffy lightweight travel tripod that fits neatly onto the side of my camera backpack (which will also hold my laptop and anything else I want to carry on). I carried it to France and around Paris, so I k...
