Song about Wally Funk (from a play about the Mercury 13)

Fantastically nerdy theater writer Helen Arney is working on a play about the Mercury 13 called "Almost Astronauts". On episode 3.1 (October 10, 2023) of A Podcast Of Unnecessary Detail she shared one of the songs written for (and subsequently cut from) the show, about Wally Funk. Check it...

Re: American Samoa Teacher of the Year faced discrimination on the way home from Camp

Im not a fan of the Huntsville airport. I'm surprised. Beyond the cost (unavoidable in a small airport), I find the airport to be excellent. I do agree entirely about there being multiple sides to a story and a general lack of airline "customer service". This being American Airlines in pa...

American Samoa Teacher of the Year faced discrimination on the way home from Camp

This doesn't refect well on Huntsville: "Suluai-Mahuka, a high school English teacher, wrote she departed Huntsville's U.S. Space & Rocket Center at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center on a "joyous high." She and all state teachers of the year had been invited to the space camp th...

Fuility Closet Puzzler

Futility Closet is one of my favorite podcasts, each week featuring a fascinating "forgotten stor[y] from the pages of history", plus a lateral thinking puzzle. This week's episode is 316: A Malaysian Mystery . I'm sharing it because the lateral thinking puzzle (which starts at 25:55) has ...

It was free for a period of time, no credit card required, as media companies were offering content to entertain folks stuck at home during the pandemic.

"For All Mankind"

"For All Mankind" is a dramatic historical fiction series on Apple TV that imagines a world in which the USSR lands on the moon before the USA. It's currently free to watch. I just finished the second episode and my reaction is a solid "meh". I was excited by the totally unique c...

Incidentally, that's a great team photo! I love how the STA looks like it has a little grin.

Just got back from Family Camp and our team photo was in front of the LM mockup in the Davidson Center. I much would've preferred this one.

Oh, wow. We attended several times together and she was a really fun teammate. :(

We were friends on Facebook, but somehow I missed this when it happened. Thanks for posting it.

SAC Museum

I am in Omaha for work this week and today I had the chance to check out the Strategic Air Command Museum in nearby Ashland, NE. I was surprised by the number of NASA artifacts, so I thought I'd share. The museum is gorgeous. An Atlas mission stands guard outside (along with a few other missiles and...

Re: Looking for old teammates

I've thought of making some type of 'non-official Space Camp' Google document or file share of some sort for alumni to post their class information, dates, and anything they'd want to share (scans of mission patches, artwork, etc), or even their email address for those long lost teammates. Shortly ...

Re: The Mars Generation Movie

I'm excited for this movie. I'm assuming the USSRC will have some sort of release party, otherwise I may have to host a small gathering myself. Since it's being distributed directly by Netflix, I wouldn't be surprised if it has fewer geographical restrictions than some of their licensed content. I'l...
