The teams were quite small - maybe 8 people per team.

Back when I went in the summer of 1999 there were not a whole lot of females. Also all the males for all the teams during that week occupied one room to its full capacity. (In fact the counselors exhorted us to tell people about AC, despite the fact that we had three different teams that session).

coffeediver- I am in Camp Casey. Ft. Benning BCTB is probably easier than in 97 but it is absolutely no walk in the park, like I hear Ft. Jackson is. What I meant to say is that Grunt did PT similar to the way we did it in Basic, but much less strict. For example, if one person put his feet down dur...

Well put sir. To sum it all up, when I arrived in my Basic Training company, it was a world of chaos. For a day I wondered if I made the right choice as the drill sergeants smoked us incessently. At Aviation Challenge, when I arrived, there was no doubt in my mind that I made the right choice. I did...

What were your scenarios for the E&E/Patrolling Missions

I'm just wondering-

What kind of scenario did you guys have for your E&E/Patrolling Missions?
All I remember was Link portraying an indigenous guerrilla member helping us evade the enemy, that's it.

Ours was SO flexible we shammed a lot and basically played volleyball all day- because our schedule was really ate up. We did not get trained in survival/first aid at all.

When I went there in June 1999 we were fighting against the North or South Khosanese- the enemy leader had a Korean sounding name). In our briefing we were told to write down the radio frequency number down (I was the only trainee in my team to have a notepad- oh my team was ate up). I remember Grun...

Referring to the website photos,

the cockpit was the same as it was back in 1999, with the HUD being projected on the hanging screen while the dials were displayed on the screen inside your cockpit.

Otherwise no comment.

I also liked the zipline and helo dunker- in fact it prepped me for the Ropes Course in Basic Training. If I survived the zipline, then the Ropes Course was a piece of cake. I was not too afraid up on the ropes and made it through alright.

Advice from a soldier

In Advanced Individual Training (my actual job training school after Basic) I used to sleep on top of the sheets as well, and it passed daily inspection by the drill sergeants. As for notebooks, buy one of those waterresistent notepads- they are great. Every military clothing and sales store/PX on a...

Praise for Mary Beth N***K (last name partially withheld)

I would like to give a shout to the best counselor I could ever have had in ASA - Mary Beth N********K who counseled Tereshkova in one of the weeks of late June of 1998. She cried when we graduated, we were so close and I regret not keeping in contact with my team.

Go to AC- It is a far cry from Basic Training as one can get

To all of those worrying about the military aspect of AC- The military aspect is so miniscule. The punishments/corrective training described in earlier posts are NOTHING compared to what I had to go through as a fresh recruit going through Basic. We marched everywhere we went. When we sat in classro...

Almost two years later since last post, and now in the army!

Hello everyone, It's been a long time since I posted here. After a period in the hallowed halls of academia, I enlisted and I am currently in the Army (not in aviation- you need to be a warrant officer or commisioned officer to fly in the Army). I am glad I went to AC- The PT format did not confuse ...

Another thing is, not many people in my teams knew a whole lot about space or aviation (except for the hardcore veterans). I went simply to seek adventure.
