EDITED POST: Out of respect for Vincent, I have deleted my rant. Try not to be so accurate with everything you have to post - your opinions and feelings are more welcomed than your unerring accuracy for all things Space Camp. Such things seem disrespectful to many of us who were so involved for so l...

That was a reward for counselor of the week for Intermediate / Mach III Counselors as well as others in the program. I know Spanky flew a couple of times, Joker as well. Not quite. I seem to recall one counselor in particular who was 1 shot shy of having and ACE (under European rules... 5) and stil...

i remember back in the 80's when the Young Astronauts was a club you could actually join. i still have the patches, posters, and other stuff from that club somewhere. Still is a club you can join, just much harder to find. There was a Young Astronauts Club that met in the Challenger Space Center in...

Sky Warriors was awesome. The aircraft flown were T-34B trainer aircraft utilized by the Navy for primary flight training. Many counselors had the opportunity to fly those aircraft in the program as well. That was a reward for counselor of the week for Intermediate / Mach III Counselors as well as o...

I think that Space Camp book referred to earlier is the one with one or two pictures of Spanky as a youngster attending Camp in it.

He's so cute.

Snared A short SG story One lovely summer day in 1997, the SGM came into the office grinning that particularly evil grin that only he can do. Seems that he'd been doing some thinking about devising some way to have the trainees walking to the lake from Space Camp not divert through the woods and thr...

The SGM, a Gamma Goat, and one very lucky guy.... WARNING: What you are about to read is hearsay - I have no actual knowledge of this event, but it is part of the lore of AC. Back in the day, the staff at AC didn't exactly have the best relationship with the brownshirted security guards who man the ...

The SGM would regard them as:

Cannon fodder.

Fish food.

Easy pickins.

Take your pick.

Try being out in the middle of the woods, in broad daylight, and having him sneak up on you. The man is a wraith. He wore a gillie suit at AC on numerous occasions and I followed him through a thicket. He never got caught on anything. Truly amazing.

There were plenty of counselors that worked mostly sim support or other support throughout their summers for those reasons. Attrition should be a natural part of the training process. Watering down training so that everyone can "get it" is not training for success. Believe me, regardless o...

Once upon a time....Counselor Training So, I'm thinking about Counselor Training again today, and a funny memory came bubbling to the surface of my mind. It's a Spring Counselor Training session and, imagine this, it's raining in Alabama. Horrors! This was about the time that the front of the barn w...

Atlantis Headed Back To The Pad

The ending is kinda funny - "Please sign our multi-billion dollar contracts!" By MIKE SCHNEIDER, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 12 minutes ago CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - After 2 1/2 months of repairs to its external fuel tank, space shuttle Atlantis returned to the launch pad Tuesday in antic...

Murph,

No, Martin isn't there anymore. Not sure when he left, but he was one of the first managers of the AC program. When I interviewed in 1995, he was not there. At that time, Ralph Bryson was the Program Manager and Steve Austin was the Assistant Program Manager.

I wanted to come up with a neat response, but Joker has said everything I wanted to say. The warrior ethos is what made (and I hope still makes) AC what it is. There are plenty of people who could do either job, but if you're trained to do either job, you do neither very well. Go back to program spe...
